Why you should always capture video, audio—even if you think you won’t use it

Let’s be honest: sometimes, recording video or audio feels like just another task on your long to-do list. Maybe you’re giving a presentation, leading a workshop, or running a meeting, and hitting "record" doesn’t seem like a priority. But trust me, taking the time to capture that content could end up being a goldmine for future projects.

The same video and audio you gather can be used for so many other things. Whether it's a quick clip of a meeting or an entire presentation, that content can be transformed into something new with minimal effort. And with today’s AI tools, the possibilities are nearly endless.

A Real-World Example

At the September 2024 Social Media Breakfast, our co-founder Samantha Morgan recorded her entire presentation with nothing more than her phone and a Rode lav mic. The video was captured with AI tracking software on a DJI gimbal (which sounds fancy, but is really simple to use), and the audio was transcribed using DaVinci Resolve. She then uploaded the transcript into Google Docs and passed it through an AI tool, Notebook LM, to create a podcast from the presentation.

That sounds like a lot of steps, but in reality, it’s just about using tools smartly. And once the audio and video were recorded, it opened up so many doors. Not only did we have a video and a podcast episode ready to go, but we could create variety of different content.

Turn Audio Into So Much More

Recording audio, in particular, is a powerhouse for creating other types of content. Sure, you can create a podcast, but you can also use that same audio for:

  • Email Summaries: Got a long meeting or presentation? No problem. Use AI to transcribe the audio and generate a brief email summary for your team or audience.

  • Newsletter Articles: Take the core points of your presentation and turn them into a featured article for your next newsletter.

  • Social Media Posts: Grab soundbites or key takeaways from the audio and break them down into short social posts. Add a quote or snippet from the audio and you’ve got yourself engaging content for Instagram, Twitter, or LinkedIn.

  • Educational Workbooks: If your content is educational, the transcription of your audio can be the starting point for worksheets, study guides, or even full-fledged workbooks.

  • Books: Got big ambitions? That same content could be expanded into chapters of a book. Plenty of authors take the core of their presentations or workshops and use them to write books.

AI Makes It Easier Than Ever

If the thought of creating all that content sounds overwhelming, don’t worry. AI tools like Notebook LM, ChatGPT, and DaVinci Resolve can handle a lot of the heavy lifting for you. Transcribing audio, creating summaries, and even generating social media captions is just a few clicks away. Instead of starting from scratch, you’re repurposing what you already have—and the result is polished, professional content.

A Few Other Ideas for Repurposing Your Content

Here are even more ways you can use the video and audio you capture:

  • Training Videos: If you’ve recorded a how-to or a live workshop, those recordings can be used to build an internal training library.

  • Client Resources: Use snippets from presentations or meetings to create tutorials or FAQs for clients.

  • Course Content: Have you been thinking about launching an online course? Your past presentations or workshops could serve as the foundation for your course materials. Recordings can be edited into lessons, and transcripts can be expanded into course handouts.

  • Q&A Sessions: If you have a recorded Q&A from an event, you can chop that up into shorter segments and use it to address frequently asked questions on your website or social media.

Always Hit Record

In the digital age, every piece of content you create is a potential asset for future projects. So, whenever you have the chance, hit record. Whether it’s a full-on video production or just a simple audio recording, the content you capture today could turn into tomorrow’s newsletter, podcast, blog post, or even a book.
